How I Secured a UAL Offer in Just 3 Months | Industrial Design Student Case Study
Student Case Study: Offer received from University of the Arts London (UAL) – Central Saint Martins Foundation
Student Background
Student Li is a Grade 12 student from an international school in Singapore. When he first came to us, it was already at the very last stage of the portfolio preparation timeline and applications were soon opening. He had limited time, heavy workload, unclear creative direction, and minimal hands-on experience.
Nonetheless, we believe that students with genuine ideas only need the right guidance.
Over the next three months, he worked closely with our tutors on a daily basis — rapidly building creative thinking skills, learning how to structure strong design projects, and improving his technical execution. Step by step, he developed a complete, thoughtful, and conceptually strong portfolio, which ultimately led to him receiving an offer from Central Saint Martins Foundation at UAL.
Portfolio Highlights
🔹 Project 1: Interactive Design Inspired by Everyday Life
Starting from his personal struggle with insomnia, the student explored how design could improve sleep quality.
Through interviews, sleep diaries, and data analysis, he established connections between emotional states and sleep patterns, and proposed a solution using light-based installation design.
🔹 Project 2: Materials & Technology Experiments
He experimented with various “future materials”, creating experimental installations to explore new possibilities for product interaction.
🔹 Project 3: Advanced Concept Development
Beginning with observational research, the project evolved into system-based thinking, demonstrating the student’s rapid creative growth and his understanding of product context and design logic within a short timeframe.
